Brooklyn Man Gets Four To Ten Years For Coinbase Support Scam Stealing $16M

Ronald Spektor, a 23-year-old Brooklyn resident, was sentenced Wednesday, September 23, to four-to-ten years in prison for running a year-long Coinbase support impersonation scam that stole roughly $16 million in cryptocurrency from about 100 victims. The sentence was handed down following a prosecution by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, which detailed how Spektor posed as Coinbase customer support representatives to gain access to victims' accounts.

According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, Spektor's scheme operated over approximately one year, during which he and his co-conspirators contacted victims while impersonating Coinbase support personnel. By convincing victims they were speaking with legitimate Coinbase representatives, Spektor was able to obtain sensitive account credentials and access to their cryptocurrency wallets, ultimately draining approximately $16 million in digital assets from the roughly 100 victims.

The four-to-ten-year sentence reflects the severity of the fraud, which targeted individual cryptocurrency holders and exploited trust in a major exchange's customer support channels.
